Stores and logistics team Key Responsibilities
Civil Works & Machinery Operation
- Operate civil construction machinery competently and legally, including excavators, loaders, graders, rollers, trucks and associated plant, appropriate to experience level.
- Undertake civil works including earthworks, services installation, drainage, foundations, trimming, backfilling, and reinstatement.
- Read and interpret civil drawings and set-out information, identifying discrepancies and raising them with the Senior Foreman or Project Manager.
- Construct works to required lines, levels, grades, and tolerances.
- Carry out daily pre-start checks, basic maintenance, and record keeping for machinery and equipment.
- Support efficient use of plant, materials, and labour to minimise waste and rework.
Quality Control
- Carry out continual quality checks on own work and assist with checking works undertaken by others as directed.
- Ensure works are completed in accordance with drawings, specifications, and company quality standards.
- Identify and report quality issues early to allow timely correction.
Health & Safety
- Comply with all Thompson Health and Safety policies, procedures, and site-specific safety plans.
- Take personal responsibility for working safely and looking out for the safety of others.
- Participate in toolbox meetings, pre-starts, training, and safety reporting.
- Understand and comply with duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015.
- Assist the Senior Foreman in maintaining a safe, tidy, and well-managed site.
Communication & Teamwork
- Communicate clearly and respectfully with supervisors, team members, and subcontractors.
- Follow instructions from the Senior Foreman and Senior Operator and provide feedback on progress, issues, or constraints.
- Contribute to a positive, collaborative site culture consistent with the Thompson Way.
- Accurately record relevant site information when required.
Training & Development
- Be proactive in developing skills, licences, and competencies relevant to the role.
- Participate in training opportunities provided by the company.
- Support apprentices or less experienced staff by sharing knowledge when appropriate.
- Continue developing capability with site technology and systems used by the company.
General Duties
- Carry out tasks reasonably requested by the Senior Foreman, Senior Operator, or management.
- Maintain a tidy work area, tools, and equipment.
- Uphold company policies, procedures, and values at all times.
- Be flexible and willing to assist across civil projects as required.
- Proven experience in civil construction as an operator (mid-level).
- Competent operation of civil machinery relevant to experience.
- Ability to read and work from plans and set-out information.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to quality.
- Commitment to health and safety.
- Experience with drainage and services installation.
- Familiarity with GPS, lasers, dumpy levels, or similar equipment.
- Class 4 (or higher) licence, WTR endorsements, or other relevant licences.
- Experience working within NZ civil construction standards and council requirements.
